Haiti
Haiti occupies one third of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola and has only relatively recently opened its arms to tourism. It is probably the poorest country in the Caribbean and is very different from its neighbour on the island, the Dominican Republic. Its beliefs and traditions are a mix of african and french creole. It is a mountainous country but bare as the once lush forest has disappeared to make way for farming or simply to be burnt as fuel. This has led to soil erosion and other ecological issues. Most locals speak their own Haitian dialect originating from french creole.
